Our Principal

Dear Cherokee Point Families,

Welcome back to school! As I embark on my 7th year at Cherokee Point, I am proud to return to a year that I know will be filled with great learning for students and opportunities for families to connect with the school. As a first year Community School, our school is on a special path with a goal of working even closer with our community partners, families, staff, and students to create the best educational experience possible for everyone! Please be sure to read the Community School letter in the Welcome Back Folder for more exciting information.

As a Trauma Informed school using Restorative Justice Practices, our staff understands that every child comes to us with a different background and has various needs in the area of academics and social emotional health. Everyone regardless of cultural differences, beliefs, and backgrounds are welcomed and respected on our campus with equity at the center of all our school decisions. Our school has dedicated school funds to ensure that students have access to an on site counselor four days a week. Mrs. Conner works with extended counseling services such as Project Impact and Douglas Young Youth Services to ensure that our students’ social emotional needs are met. In addition to this support, we are partnering with Northcentral Early Prevention Program for the Classroom Dina Social Emotional Curriculum supporting PK - 3rd. Staff are here to support parents and students every year. Staff are working on ways to make sure that parents and students feel safe, supported, heard, included, and welcomed.

Attendance is always a large focus at our school because we want all PK - 5 students to be successful. Research shows that when students are chronically late or absent, it adversely affects their academics as they tend to have lower reading levels and lower ability in multiple subject areas. When students miss school, they miss out! Please work with your child and family to create a morning routine and plan to get to school by 7:30 a.m. everyday!

I encourage all parents of  students at any grade level to read with your students every day for 20 minutes. Reading with and to students in any language will build listening comprehension, reading comprehension, vocabulary and fluency, and most importantly provides quality time with your child. Please connect with your classroom teacher for books to be sent home weekly.

Every year I ask that parents and guardians work as a team with the school in order to achieve a high level of success for their child. Communication is essential to your child’s success. Please make sure that you are connected to the CLASS DOJO application on your phone once school starts. This is the main form of communication between the school and family members. Teacher and school announcements will be posted to CLASS DOJO. Your classroom teacher will help you get connected. Please be sure to email/CLASS DOJO message your teacher if you have any questions early so that any questions or concerns can be addressed immediately. It is also extremely important that parent and guardian contact information and phone number is accurate and updated in the office in case of an emergency. If you have any difficulty connecting with staff, please email me at [email protected] and I can support you.

Thank you for your ongoing support! I am thrilled to serve another year with this amazing community.

Warmly,

Mrs. Corral
